Welcome

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Alyssia Varricchio and I am 19 years old. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Journalism (Sport) at La Trobe University, striving for a career in the media industry.

Through my new blog “Emerging Athletes, Emerging Fans” I aim to bring you stories about the journeys and challenges of young up and coming sports stars. In addition I will provide my own personal experiences as a mad sports fan including stories about professional athletes I have met and supported throughout my life. I will also include interviews with some future stars so that you can experience first hand what training and pressures are involved in such a competitive field. After all, these are young athletes aiming to pursue a life-long career in their chosen sport.

Ever since a young age, I have always had a keen interest in sport, once dreaming of life as a professional athlete myself. I began ballet lessons at age 5 and after 4 years of trying to point my toes and perfect my curtsy, I realised I was not destined to become a ballerina. One year later, I discovered that after countless swimming lessons, I was no Stephanie Rice. Refusing to give up, at age 11, I developed great aspirations to become the next Lauren Jackson. I must have temporarily forgotten that I was only a mere 165cm tall, if that. Finally conceding that my legs were simply not going to grow no matter how much I tried to frantically stretch them, I decided to pursue my tennis career.

Despite entering several tournaments and competing in matches on Show Court 2 and Show Court 3 at Melbourne Park, I was no elite athlete. Along with my partner, I managed to win the Women’s Doubles Final at the 2010 Melbourne Park Queens Birthday tournament. But, don’t be fooled, I was not about to break out onto the WTA tour anytime soon. Funnily enough, the posters of Nadal plastered all over my bedroom wall did nothing to improve my tennis potential.

Through this blog I have combined my love of sport with my love of writing. After realising first-hand what intense dedication and sacrifices athletes must make, I aim to showcase some of the amazing talent ‘emerging’ athletes possess. I want to make the public aware of this talent and persistence that may otherwise go unnoticed.
